{"id":6555,"date":"2022-02-23T13:22:22","date_gmt":"2022-02-23T13:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/02\/23\/didsbury-civic-society-raises-funds-new-garden-contemplation-village-war-memorial\/"},"modified":"2022-02-23T13:22:22","modified_gmt":"2022-02-23T13:22:22","slug":"didsbury-civic-society-raises-funds-new-garden-contemplation-village-war-memorial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/didsbury-civic-society-raises-funds-new-garden-contemplation-village-war-memorial\/","title":{"rendered":"Didsbury Civic Society raises funds for new garden of contemplation at village war memorial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.didsburycivicsociety.org\/\">Didsbury<\/a>&nbsp;Civic Society is raising funds for a new garden of contemplation to be built at the village war memorial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The war memorial was unveiled just over 100 years ago&nbsp;in 1921&nbsp;to honour the 174 local servicemen from Didsbury who lost their lives in the first world war.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The monument sits at the heart of the village, but&nbsp;in recent years the area around the memorial has seen better days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Didsbury war memorial Manchester\" data-delta=\"2\" data-fid=\"8249\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/didsbury_monument_1_0.png\" title=\"A photograph of the Didsbury WW1 monument in sunlight\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Ddisbury war memorial February 2022<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/stjamesandemmanuel.org\/nick-bundock\/\">Nicholas Bundock<\/a>, rector for <a href=\"https:\/\/stjamesandemmanuel.org\/\">St James and Emmanuel Church<\/a> in Didsbury&nbsp;set up a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crowdfunder.co.uk\/p\/didsburycenotaph\">Crowdfunder <\/a>towards the end of 2021.<\/p>\n<p>It states:&nbsp;\u201cThe memorial is unnaturally fenced away and the land surrounding the monument has been overtaken by laurels and other invasive, low biodiversity, species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe current site of the war memorial is a disgrace to the people who gave their lives, and we can do much better than this.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Plans<\/h2>\n<p>The plan is to spend \u00a320-\u00a330k raised from crowdfunding and grants to create a garden of contemplation around the war memorial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The garden will have eco-friendly planting to attract insects, with low maintenance but sensory, fragrant or colourful planting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Paths will be accessible by wheelchair with seating made from sustainable materials alongside solar-powered ambient light.&nbsp;&nbsp;The design could also include the potential for mounted art.<\/p>\n<p>While the civic society is at the forefront of the initiative, they are not alone.&nbsp;Didsbury residents, Didsbury in Bloom, local councillors, council officers and St James and Emmanuel church have been meeting regularly to investigate how to improve the war memorial.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Notice Board by the war memorial for Didsbury Civic Society\" data-delta=\"4\" data-fid=\"8251\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"152\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/didsbury_civic_society_sign.png\" title=\"Didsbury Civic Society sign by the war memorial\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Didsbury Civic Society is one of the groups involved in the renovation<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The redesign will take the form of a competition&nbsp;with designers asked to submit plans following a brief.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"team rector, Nick Bundock from St James and Emmanuel \" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8248\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"338\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/nick_bundock_team_rector.jpeg\" title=\"A photo of Nicholas Bundock.
