{"id":6572,"date":"2022-02-24T00:14:08","date_gmt":"2022-02-24T00:14:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/02\/24\/cooking-words-poets-anjum-malik-and-zouk-collaborate-celebrate-south-asian-culture\/"},"modified":"2022-02-24T00:14:08","modified_gmt":"2022-02-24T00:14:08","slug":"cooking-words-poets-anjum-malik-and-zouk-collaborate-celebrate-south-asian-culture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/cooking-words-poets-anjum-malik-and-zouk-collaborate-celebrate-south-asian-culture\/","title":{"rendered":"Cooking With Words: poets Anjum Malik and Zouk collaborate to celebrate south Asian culture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Multilingual poetry and the finest South Asian cuisine came together in the form of poet&nbsp;Anjum Malik and Zouk&nbsp;restaurant to celebrate&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/observances\/mother-language-day\">International Mother Language Day<\/a>&nbsp;at a joint event called Cook With Words.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mmu.ac.uk\/english\/staff\/profile\/index.php?id=2639\">Anjum Malik<\/a>&nbsp;read a series of poems at the&nbsp;event, which included a brand new poem especially written for the occasion.<\/p>\n<p>More than 60 people attended the event, seated in booths and tables in the upstairs section of the restaurant, conversing in both English and various south Asian languages.<\/p>\n<p>The poems were mainly spoken in Urdu, with some translated to English afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>Anjum&#8217;s first poem was inspired by her first visit to the restaurant to Zouk for her residency, where she watched chefs cook samosas.<\/p>\n<p>The poem was an exploration of south Asian culture, examining the relationship between identity and food.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"3\" data-fid=\"8224\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/e7926d81-cb86-46de-a89a-06b81e165063-scaled.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Image taken of South Asian Crusine by Northern Quota<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This year will be the fifth consecutive year Manchester has celebrated the event.<\/p>\n<p>Last year due to the covid pandemic 18 digital events were organised to mark the significance of international languages to Manchester and the&nbsp;diversity of the city,&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anjun said: \u201cSo I wrote this poem for a Halloween event for children. It&#8217;s published in a children&#8217;s book by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.panmacmillan.com\">Macmillan.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;And when I was asked to send some poems to be considered, I never thought they would take this poem because its title is called&nbsp;<em>Bloody Samosas!&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Anjum worked with the chefs to curate dishes which accurately represents her culture.<\/p>\n<p>One of her poems,&nbsp;<em>Bradford Asian, <\/em>she&nbsp;dedicated it to childhood friend and owner of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/zoukteabar.co.uk\/culture\/all-about-zouk\/\">Zouk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Anjum said: \u201cThis poem is about where we come from, and I am so proud of Anju and the people of Bradford.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Huge thanks to the three people who made <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CookingWithWords?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#CookingWithWords<\/a> happen: poet-in-residence <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anjummalik?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@anjummalik<\/a>, producer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ReeceIWilliams?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ReeceIWilliams<\/a> and our restaurant host Amjad from <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ZoukTeaBar?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ZoukTeaBar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tA fabulous afternoon of food and poetry for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MCRIMLD22?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MCRIMLD22<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zl8PckgUvL\">pic.twitter.com\/zl8PckgUvL<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 Ivan Wadeson (@Ivan_Wadeson) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ivan_Wadeson\/status\/1495471601000849410?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cWhen I was asked to do this residency, I asked to come to Zouk because they started way back in Bradford two doors down from my mum\u2019s shop.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We grew up together and went through similar things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poem is about growing up as a second-generation in England, specifically Bradford and the respect people have for their parents who were the first-generation settlers.<\/p>\n<p>It also explores the impact&nbsp;south Asia has had on British culture, art, food, music, fashion and other sectors.<\/p>\n<p>Anjum&#8217;s final poem was dedicated to her parents.&nbsp;She confessed to NQ&nbsp;that her parents always ate off of the same plate, which is the main idea explored in the poem.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8222\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"399\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/litzouk_200222_garybrown-107-scaled.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Image taken by Gary Brown of&nbsp;Anjum Malik and Reece Williams<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"2\" data-fid=\"8223\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"399\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/02\/litzouk_200222_garybrown-126-scaled.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Image taken by Gary Brown of&nbsp;Anjum Malik<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reece Williams,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.manchestercityofliterature.com\">Manchester City of Literature<\/a>\u2019s community engagement manager, introduced said: \u201cManchester is a city of languages. We have over 200 languages spoken in Manchester, and we need an international language day or a festival that can really celebrate the richness of Manchester\u2019s diversity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think something that is absolutely multilingual is food, right?
