{"id":6643,"date":"2022-03-03T18:22:31","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T18:22:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/03\/03\/changing-young-lives-inner-city-manchester-how-st-georges-community-centre-helping-young\/"},"modified":"2022-03-03T18:22:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-03T18:22:31","slug":"changing-young-lives-inner-city-manchester-how-st-georges-community-centre-helping-young","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/changing-young-lives-inner-city-manchester-how-st-georges-community-centre-helping-young\/","title":{"rendered":"Changing young lives in inner city Manchester: how St George&#8217;s community centre is helping young people"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">\u201cThe value of youth work is about making a young person understand themselves better,\u201d explains youth worker Chris Macintosh.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chris works out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stgeorgescommunitycentre.com\/\">St George\u2019s<\/a>, a&nbsp;<\/span><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">social hub for people in&nbsp;Collyhurst and home to Youth Project at Apostles and Cuthberts (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ypacmanchester.org.uk\/\">YPAC<\/a>)<\/span><span>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><meta charset=\"utf-8\"><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">It focusses on helping young people by organising playgroups, a junior youth group as well as a senior youth group, with ages spanning from 6 &#8211; 19. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>The aim is to allow them to&nbsp; \u201chave the opportunity to increase their skills, aspirations and confidence,\u201d Chris comments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Many of the children YPAC works with in Collyhurst are second-generation African immigrants.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">When the Northern Quota visited the centre was being set up for for the 16 to 18-year-olds. Chris gave a tour around the facilities and we settled in one of the conversation nooks to hear more about the work he is doing.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">Most of the young people who attend activities during the week come from Miles Platting and many see&nbsp;the YPAC staff at least once-a-week.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">Chris, who has been with YPAC at St George\u2019s for the last six years, oversees the operation of the charity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cI have always felt an affinity to inner city Manchester,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cI did youth work in Ardwick and Longsight for around 15 years.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>He explained the ways in which the centre&nbsp;integrates with the community&nbsp;and its philosophy of youth work.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">\u201cWe initially started with a transition group to help year six children settle in better into secondary.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Around 15 children filter through the different youth sessions at St George\u2019s&nbsp;as they grew up.&nbsp; Chris say they&nbsp;<\/span><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">operate&nbsp;two different types of youth work,&nbsp;<\/span><span>\u201cbuilding-based work as well as detached youth work.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Building-based work consists of sessions within the community centre. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Chris remarked: \u201cAs a youth worker, you are working with young people the best you can, but you are also responsible for the spaces you use. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;So if people are being destructive of this space, you\u2019ve got to manage the safety of the space, and for some young people that is too much for them.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8309\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/03\/image_0-scaled.jpeg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Caption<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">Detached youth work is where&nbsp;and his team go out into the community and approach young people in person.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>He says: \u201cIt\u2019s about making relationships with young people on the streets.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Working in Collyhurst and Miles Platting, Chris explains that \u201cdoing this, on these estates can be quite dramatic\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Chirs, who works in a team of 10, said tensions within the community have&nbsp;heightened over the last few years. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cThe people that generally approach the youth on the streets, either want to do them harm, or are the police who have negative intentions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">\u201cWith detached youth work you find yourself working closer with the families, and especially with younger children.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">\u201cThe biggest tool in youth work is the person that is doing it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">Youth workers&nbsp;can have very different life experiences and upbringings to the&nbsp;<\/span><span>children they work with. The question of how they&nbsp;empathise with the experiences of the young community is tackled by \u201cconversations&#8221; they have with young adults.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">\u201cA lot of our older youth workers have a lot of experience with inner city areas that have the same issues,&#8221; Chris explains.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;There are a lot of common themes that run through inner city areas: poor family make-up, low literacy and numeracy levels, engagement in school, poor mental health, and big issues around poverty. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;The undercurrent of illegal activity, poor access to jobs. There\u2019s quite a lot to handle in areas like this.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">\u201cWe can\u2019t change who we are as youth workers. There will be blind spots and things you don&#8217;t know about unconscious bias, but we have quite a reflective team, so we&#8217;ve got people that are aware of their work and of themselves in these situations.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>Reflecting on their actions and what is best for individuals, as well as the wider youth group, keeps the sessions relevant and engaging.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">One current YPAC project is working with young people from east Manchester to set up, design and manage a youth bank foryoung people to apply to for funding, kin<\/span><span>collaboration with oEast Manchester Youth, Play Partnership&nbsp;and Youth Bank International.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">Other activities include setting up sessions with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lab51.co.uk\/\">Lab51 Studios<\/a> to allow older youths to make their own music. Activities over the summer involve going to theme parks and organising trips to activity centres.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-bdc7d031-7fff-97b3-9124-66827d0fbc0c\">YPAC\u2019s aims to integrate young people into the wider community through giving&nbsp;them a safe space&nbsp;<\/span><span>and a place to meet up each week.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe value of youth work is about making a young person understand themselves better,\u201d explains youth worker Chris Macintosh.
