{"id":6687,"date":"2022-03-07T16:16:23","date_gmt":"2022-03-07T16:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/03\/07\/air-quality-warning-sharston-after-reports-hazardous-air-pollution\/"},"modified":"2022-03-07T16:16:23","modified_gmt":"2022-03-07T16:16:23","slug":"air-quality-warning-sharston-after-reports-hazardous-air-pollution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/air-quality-warning-sharston-after-reports-hazardous-air-pollution\/","title":{"rendered":"Air quality warning in Sharston after reports of hazardous air pollution"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>High air pollution levels have&nbsp;been detected in Sharston &#8211; with 10 public health warnings issued since the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>The figures come from Trafford Air Quality Services, who use data collected by Clean Air Greater Manchester&nbsp;to provide a health warning service to people, especially those who suffer&nbsp;from respiratory illnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Lasty year, the World Health Organisation (WHO)&nbsp;lowered the safe pollution limit.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>\u2014 Trafford Air Quality Services (@AirTrafford) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AirTrafford\/status\/1498594208634085376?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 1, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Peaks for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) occur during times of heavy traffic,&nbsp;especially on the M60 which emits substantial volumes of harmful fumes into nearby residential areas.<\/p>\n<p>NO2 and PM2.5 emissions are mostly caused by fuel combustion. This resulted in the <a href=\"https:\/\/cleanairgm.com\/\">government agreeing to introduce a controversial Clean Air Zone<\/a>&nbsp;across greater Manchester.<\/p>\n<p>The zone, which has been delayed until 2026, will cover all 10 greater Manchester boroughs in a bid to reduce traffic build-up and lower air pollution in the region to within the updated WHO guidelines.<\/p>\n<p>Clean Air Greater Manchester said:&nbsp;\u201cHigh levels of air pollution from road traffic has a major impact on people\u2019s health, contributing to 1,200 premature deaths in greater Manchester every year. It\u2019s also increasingly seen as a contributor to breathing problems, heart disease and some cancers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">The implementation of the Greater Manchester&#8217;s Clean Air Zone has been paused until July. The Government says this will allow more time for consultation.<\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 BBC North West (@BBCNWT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCNWT\/status\/1489584101673902085?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 4, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreater Manchester Authorities remain committed to cleaning up the air residents breathe but in a way that helps people to make a change and does not put jobs, livelihoods and businesses at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreater Manchester will now work with Government to deliver, by July 2022, a new Clean Air Plan for Greater Manchester that tackles the serious public health issue of poor air quality, but which protects jobs and businesses across the city-region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Air pollution is not only cause for concern to those with respiratory illnesses: children can also be affected as their organs and immune system are in the development stage while&nbsp;healthy adults have shown development of health complications due to exposure to dirty air.<\/p>\n<p>Last September WHO announced it would be adjusting&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/22-09-2021-new-who-global-air-quality-guidelines-aim-to-save-millions-of-lives-from-air-pollution\">almost all air quality guidelines downwards<\/a>, warning that exceeding new limits could result in significant risk to health.<\/p>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>High air pollution levels have&nbsp;been detected in Sharston &#8211; with 10 public health warnings issued since the start of the year.
