{"id":6693,"date":"2022-03-08T13:05:29","date_gmt":"2022-03-08T13:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/03\/08\/levenshulme-old-library-celebrates-international-womens-day-week-community-events\/"},"modified":"2022-03-08T13:05:29","modified_gmt":"2022-03-08T13:05:29","slug":"levenshulme-old-library-celebrates-international-womens-day-week-community-events","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/levenshulme-old-library-celebrates-international-womens-day-week-community-events\/","title":{"rendered":"Levenshulme Old Library celebrates International Women\u2019s Day with week of community events"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/levenshulmeoldlibrary.org.uk\/\">Levenshulme Old Library<\/a>&nbsp;is celebrating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/a> with a series of events throughout the week including a night of spoken word compered by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rkenny_writes\">Rebecca Kenny<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ten north-west female writers will perform at the event including <a href=\"https:\/\/zenabarrie.com\/\">Zena Barrie<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/spokenlabel.bandcamp.com\/album\/loll-perkin-spoken-label-january-2022\">Loll Perkin<\/a> and Levenshulme resident <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanwords.org.uk\/sarah\/\">Sarah Butler<\/a>, who is headlining.<\/p>\n<p>The event will be an informal affair with people invited to bring their own food and drinks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.co.uk\/e\/lol-women-tickets-259409459677\">Tickets<\/a> are \u00a35 and can be bought on Eventbrite.<\/p>\n<p>Celebrations continue on Saturday (12 March) with a free arts and crafts session at Levenshulme Old Library where children will be able to make banners, bunting and zines. In the evening, vegetarian restaurant <a href=\"https:\/\/thegherkin.org.uk\/\">The Gherkin<\/a> will host a club night with a line-up of female DJs playing songs by women.<\/p>\n<p>Half of the proceeds from the events will be donated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pankhursttrust.org\/about-us\">Pankhurst Trust<\/a> which provides aid to women suffering from domestic abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The trust also funds the Pankhurst Centre,&nbsp;former home of suffragette <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/history\/historic_figures\/pankhurst_emmeline.shtml\">Emmeline Pankhurst<\/a>. As well as serving as a small museum and heritage site, the centre is&nbsp;a women\u2019s centre and community space.<\/p>\n<p>The other half of the events\u2019 proceeds will go towards funding various projects organised by Levenshulme Old Library.<\/p>\n<p>Manager of Levenshulme Old Library, Laura Deane, said: \u201cIdeally, I want the profits for this to go into work supporting women again.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve got a creative writing course starting for children in a couple of weeks that&#8217;s been set up by a 10-year-old girl in Levenshulme which will enable&nbsp;young people and young females to have a bit of a voice in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Levenshulme Old Library is a community arts centre and charity, housed in the former Levenshulme library on Cromwell Grove and is home to award winning community radio station <a href=\"https:\/\/allfm.org\/\">All FM<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Happy <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IWD2022?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IWD2022<\/a> at ALLFM. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8yJmnMrnYz\">pic.twitter.com\/8yJmnMrnYz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\t\u2014 ALL FM 96.9 (@ALLFM) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ALLFM\/status\/1501172294332395530?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The radio station will also be contributing to the day\u2019s celebrations by dedicating their entire schedule to International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the spoken word event, Rebecca Kenny&nbsp;said: \u201cIt\u2019s a brilliant range of artists.
