{"id":6801,"date":"2022-05-04T19:56:01","date_gmt":"2022-05-04T18:56:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/05\/04\/all-parties-look-make-gains-bury-council-election-greater-manchester-goes-polls\/"},"modified":"2022-05-04T19:56:01","modified_gmt":"2022-05-04T18:56:01","slug":"all-parties-look-make-gains-bury-council-election-greater-manchester-goes-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/all-parties-look-make-gains-bury-council-election-greater-manchester-goes-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"All parties look to make gains in Bury council election as greater Manchester goes to the polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, Christian Wakeford, the newly-elected then Tory MP for Bury South, defected to the Labour party amid&nbsp;the Partygate scandal, causing a large state of unrest on the Conservative benches.<\/p>\n<p>This move, while it seemed momentous at the time, may have an unusual effect on tomorrow&#8217;s local elections, especially in Bury, a town Wakeford represents alongside Tory MP James Daly.<\/p>\n<p>Wakeford\u2019s defection to Labour could means a few things in the election.<\/p>\n<p>It could help Bury\u2019s large Jewish community to feel safe voting for the Labour party again, after years of antisemitism allegations directed towards the party under Jeremy Corbyn\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Wakeford won the seat as an anti-Labour candidate, so it would not be surprising if past Labour voters return to the party as a result of his defection.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bury South MP Christian Wakeford's parliamentary office, Radcliffe\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8449\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/05\/wakefords_parliamentary_office-scaled.jpg\" title=\"Bury South's MP Christian Wakeford's parliamentary office\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Labour MP Christian Wakeford&#8217;s parliamentary office<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On the other hand, it could leave the other parties with room to manoeuvre, making the election solely about local issues and ignoring the ongoing national debacle about the Partygate scandal and the cost of living crisis.<\/p>\n<h3>Strategy<\/h3>\n<p>There is proof that Labour are using the national picture as a campaigning strategy, with leaflets focusing on Boris Johnson and the Conservative government, taking advantage of the government&#8217;s low approval ratings.<\/p>\n<p>The other parties, however, are aiming to pull voters in by discussing the local area and Bury council itself, a more understandable approach given what a local councillor can realistically achieve.<\/p>\n<p>However, this is still a hurdle they can trip up on, especially the Conservatives, where voters may be unable to see the party as anything other than Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n<p>In an interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2022\/apr\/29\/marginal-bury-gives-labour-local-election-jitters-as-tories-circle\">Guardian<\/a>, Nick Jones, the leader of Bury conservatives, stated: \u201cWhen we knock on doors, we\u2019re not there to talk about Downing Street. We talk about potholes in their street. With every council seat up for grabs, they will certainly use that to their advantage and hope to gain a few seats in an area that is being hotly contested between several major parties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Bury Lib Dems: Anger over changes to bus services<\/p>\n<p>\t\tLocal residents in Prestwich and Simister have been upset to hear about changes to long-established bus routes.
