{"id":6885,"date":"2022-06-14T14:32:50","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T13:32:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/06\/14\/its-never-just-playing-pretend-contact-theatre-reaches-out-lgbtq-community\/"},"modified":"2022-06-14T14:32:50","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T13:32:50","slug":"its-never-just-playing-pretend-contact-theatre-reaches-out-lgbtq-community","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/its-never-just-playing-pretend-contact-theatre-reaches-out-lgbtq-community\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;It\u2019s never just playing pretend&#8217; at the Contact: theatre reaches out to LGBTQ+ community"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contact theatre&nbsp;often focusses on the importance of culture and highlight members of the LGBTQ+ community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Recently Contact featured The Bread We Break, a one-woman show featuring Miray Sidhom, which told the story of how bread is so culturally and economically important to Egypt and its history.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In March&nbsp;it was announced that Keisha Thompson &#8211; who started at as an artist at the age of 15 &#8211; would be taking on the role of artistic director, the first Black woman and youngest person at the age of 32 to be CEO.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"3\" data-fid=\"8528\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"398\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/06\/contact_mcr_keisha_thompson_ad_photo_credit_audrey_albert_-_4-scaled.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Faith Yianni, executive and management PA at Contact&nbsp; Image: Audrey Albert<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Faith Yianni, 27, executive and management PA,&nbsp;speaks highly of the way the theatre is standing out as an arts organisation.<\/p>\n<p>She said: \u201cIt was very much a love affair from the start with me and Contact.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Working in the arts has always been the goal for me. I went to university for performing arts and I started to do more applied theatre and I really liked that it was using creative practice in a real-world setting.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>I really do think&nbsp;we\u2019re here to serve all&nbsp;and we try to do that&nbsp;through open conversations<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6kB1fIoqzas\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Studio engineer Danny Hassan, 25, said:&nbsp;\u201cI\u2019ve always been a musician ever since I was young.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I started working with the boss of the music section here at Contact.&nbsp;Sam Malik and I&nbsp;became good friends, so when it reopened in 2020&nbsp;he asked me to work here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took part in Level Up, which is Contact\u2019s artist development program and that gave me even more opportunities within this company and in the music industry in general.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The theatre puts an emphasis on programs for young artists with Monday mic nights, drama, music and writing drops aimed at providing young people with a creative outlet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis truly is a young person-led organisation. They have a young person interview panel as well as the staff panel and the reason for that is because if you can\u2019t talk to and engage with young people, it\u2019s going to be difficult to work here,&#8221; said Danny.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/G89vFXKd-Ds\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cContact is very open and accepting of everyone here, no matter what you do and they embrace that difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYoung people are the future and the arts provide an outlet for them. Even in my time here so far, I\u2019ve seen a lot of unfortunate circumstances for young people but they can come here and realise their potential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s rewarding work for Danny, especially when he gets to see how much Contact has helped someone.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cI\u2019ve had parents come up to me and tell me that I\u2019ve had such an impact on their son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both Faith and Danny agree that Contact is constantly pushing to do more for anyone they can help.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"4\" data-fid=\"8529\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"450\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/06\/contact_auditorium.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Inside the main auditorium at Contact<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s anyone in this organisation who came here with one idea of what they wanted to do and only did that.<\/p>\n<p>Faith says: &#8220;We very much have that open conversation of what the young people might need, what the audiences might need and what the people of Manchester might need,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Danny added: \u201cIt\u2019s a big organisation, I\u2019m here facilitating the workshop but there are people directing those programs and then Sam Malik gets the funding to do specific things and there are projects that he wants to do to impact social change.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every cog in the machine has a role to play.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contact theatre&nbsp;often focusses on the importance of culture and highlight members of the LGBTQ+ community.&nbsp;
