{"id":6917,"date":"2022-06-24T11:52:52","date_gmt":"2022-06-24T10:52:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/06\/24\/i-wanted-tell-story-flower-artist-plants-pansies-sites-homophobic-abuse\/"},"modified":"2022-06-24T11:52:52","modified_gmt":"2022-06-24T10:52:52","slug":"i-wanted-tell-story-flower-artist-plants-pansies-sites-homophobic-abuse","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/i-wanted-tell-story-flower-artist-plants-pansies-sites-homophobic-abuse\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;I wanted to tell the story with the flower&#8217;: artist plants pansies at sites of homophobic abuse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">Homophobia and transphobia have been around as long as the LGBTQ+ community itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">With 64% of LGBTQ+ people experiencing anti-LGBTQ+ violence or abuse, many queer people are trying to reclaim their experience in various ways.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">Paul Harfleet was subject to three separate instances of homophobic abuse in just one day in 2005. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>After this he decided on a unique method of quiet resistance: planting <a href=\"https:\/\/thepansyproject.com\/\">pansies<\/a> in places where the abuse occurred.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8562\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/06\/paul_harfleet.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Paul Harfleet<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">He said: \u201cWhat I was interested in at the time was the way roadside memorials would change the way you read a street &#8211; you know that something happened if there is a roadside memorial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cI thought planting a flower where I had these experiences was a similar thing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;I wanted to tell the story with the flower, so the pansy was an obvious choice because it is also a term of abuse and I had been called a \u2018f*ing pansy\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cI don\u2019t sign them in any way, it is just a flower in a location.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/401039216?h=2b40520590\" title=\"vimeo-player\" width=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cThe focus for me is the ritual of planting and the photograph. Then people go to my website, but obviously they aren\u2019t going to necessarily know.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cWhen they do know and people see pansies in the street, they might then understand what I am doing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>\u201cWhen I published my book, <a href=\"https:\/\/thepansyproject.com\/pansy-boy\/\">Pansy Boy<\/a>, I had an article about my quest to find a publisher that was in the Guardian.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;My publisher&nbsp;read the article and remembered that he had seen a pansy that I had planted on the south bank with no signage and he\u2019d understood somehow what that meant.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"4\" data-fid=\"8565\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/06\/pansy_boy.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Paul and his picture book, Pansy Boy<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cYou kind of understand if you&#8217;re in the know but the focus is on the website.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">The Pansy Project originally started with Paul planting the flowers at the sites of his own experiences, but soon after he started, he was <a href=\"https:\/\/thepansyproject.com\/international-plantings\/\">travelling<\/a> as far as Turkey and America for the project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">He adds: : \u201cWhen I first started it in Manchester it wasn\u2019t long before I was asked.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" scrolling=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XC-_SdlFxF8\" title=\"YouTube video player\" width=\"400\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cIt is usually in the context of a festival.&nbsp;I don\u2019t just plant willy nilly, I have some sort of context, because for me planting is about community, so I require community support, often through a festival.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cI have worked with homotopia festival in Liverpool where I met with communities and planted pansies en masse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span>&#8220;Often, I would do a planting tour. Last year I did that in Bristol which was part of an exhibition with M Shed and it&#8217;s about having a sort of structure around the project, so I can reach out to the community and find the locations through research and engagement.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cPlanting the pansies with the community is a positive and political response to hate crime.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"3\" data-fid=\"8564\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"400\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/06\/manchester-pansies-2020-edit-20.jpg\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>\u201cWe\u2019re gonna bash you up!\u201d Napoleon\u2019s, Bloom Street, Manchester<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cIt&#8217;s in the context of exhibitions and festivals so the network sort of grows in that way, over the years I have been asked to go to many queer festivals, such as homotopia and outburst in Belfast.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cWhen I launched the book, that took it in different directions because it is aimed at younger people, so I went to schools, read the book and planted pansies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cThen I was a subject of a documentary in France that enabled me to take the film to festivals around Europe.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">Since starting the project, Paul found out why pansy has been used as a homophobic slur.<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">He said: \u201cIt is named after the french word penser, which is \u2018to think\u2019.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cIn France they use it like an \u2018I wish you were here\u2019, they have an illustration of a pansy on a postcard, but it means I am thinking of you, like thoughtful.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cThen when it came over to England it became associated with thoughtful people, or thoughtful men which is a negative thing to be if you are a man, according to heteronormative society.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">They might think about the pansy before they go down the road of self-hatred and internalised homophobia&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">He added: \u201cFundamentally, the aim is to raise awareness that hate crime happens and it&#8217;s to raise awareness of the fact that we still, to this day, have these sorts of issues going on, if not more.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cThere has been a massive increase of hate crime this year, especially in London. I know that in Liverpool and Birmingham that there has been a real increase.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">Whilst the pansy project is not yet synonymous with fighting hate crime, Paul hopes that it can be a small gesture that people can think about after having their own experiences with homophobic or transphobic hatecrime.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" data-delta=\"6\" data-fid=\"8567\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"600\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/06\/pansy_blackpool.jpg\" width=\"400\"><figcaption>\u201cI\u2019m not racist, I tell jokes about poofs too\u201d From Bernard Manning, North Pier, Blackpool<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">He said: \u201cThe thing that is really strong is the idea.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cIf anyone experiences any homophobic hate crime in the street&nbsp;and they know about the Pansy Project, they might think about the pansy before they go down the road of self-hatred and internalised homophobia.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><span id=\"docs-internal-guid-52c3e5d5-7fff-5157-e783-0ff0719bc8f7\">\u201cThey might think \u2018I must find a place to plant a pansy around here\u2019.
