{"id":6934,"date":"2022-07-15T11:28:15","date_gmt":"2022-07-15T10:28:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2022\/07\/15\/man-altrincham-cancer-adds-his-incredible-fundraising-efforts\/"},"modified":"2022-07-15T11:28:15","modified_gmt":"2022-07-15T10:28:15","slug":"man-altrincham-cancer-adds-his-incredible-fundraising-efforts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/man-altrincham-cancer-adds-his-incredible-fundraising-efforts\/","title":{"rendered":"Man from Altrincham with cancer adds to his incredible fundraising efforts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A man from Altrincham who is living with incurable cancer has added&nbsp;the Greater Manchester <a href=\"https:\/\/www.googleadservices.com\/pagead\/aclk?sa=L&amp;ai=DChcSEwiT8Z3n1vr4AhXUYOYKHRx_CXgYABAAGgJkZw&amp;ae=2&amp;ohost=www.google.com&amp;cid=CAESa-D2c0R01vEChQeM2uKl43m_qp4T1NFV95cBpWCtWpvrKSM57VaepJrA0intGVLvo_VU-0y5y_-6M9cgpDYXNZKRDHVDIjWhryV-iJL0RWwKu9Ef8SZxJ-xEkChc7QvXRykjP5XNX6DCyt1A&amp;sig=AOD64_31blQ6h5GNT7W8I5uvos2uVdOpEg&amp;q&amp;adurl&amp;ved=2ahUKEwivkZbn1vr4AhUViVwKHfk4CRgQ0Qx6BAgCEAE&amp;nis=8&amp;dct=1\">\u2018Football March\u2019<\/a> to his list of impressive fundraising efforts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tony Collier was diagnosed with stage four&nbsp;advanced prostate cancer in 2017 and was told he may only have two years to live.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, five years on his cancer is stable and his&nbsp;passion for exercise sees ghim him running 5k everyday to help raise money for charity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tony will now join hundreds of football fans on the Greater Manchester \u2018Football March\u2019, which start at <a href=\"https:\/\/altrinchamfc.com\">Altrincham FC<\/a> and finish at the home of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mancity.com\/\">Manchester City<\/a> on 22&nbsp;September.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of four walking marathons taking&nbsp;place across the country to help raise money for prostate cancer UK, finishing in the capital three days later.<\/p>\n<p>Tony explained the importance of charity events such as the \u2018Football March\u2019 saying:&nbsp;\u201cFundraising events like this are important because it will help develop new drugs that will buy me more time to spend with my grandkids when my current treatment stops working.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 65 year old has previously raised around \u00a340,000 for prostate cancer UK and took part in a similar event last year known as <a href=\"https:\/\/prostatecanceruk.org\/get-involved\/find-a-fundraising-event\/jeff-s-march\">\u2018Jeff Stelling\u2019s March for Men\u2019<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Man from Altrincham with incurable prostate cancer \" data-delta=\"1\" data-fid=\"8586\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"800\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/07\/gafilun8.jpg-large.jpeg\" title=\"Tony Collier (left) pictured with Jeff Stelling (right)\" width=\"600\"><figcaption>Tony Collier (left) pictured with Phil Thompson&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Image: Tony Collier<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tony said:&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s 26 miles, it\u2019s quite a challenge but it tends to go at a very steady pace (3mph).<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There\u2019s plenty of breaks where you can get tea, coffee, and lunch. It\u2019s superbly guided by the organisers, keeping everyone safe with road crossings, it\u2019s very well organised.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople should do their best to get some practice walks in beforehand but thankfully it\u2019s a relatively slow pace and there\u2019s no major hills to climb.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWherever it ends there\u2019s usually hot food provided. All told, it should be a really good day!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After attending his first game at Altrincham in 1966, football has always been a massive part of Tony\u2019s life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>However, recently the sport has meant much more to him.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cFootball is a means of escapism to get away from the day-to-day horrors of living with incurable cancer.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI also get to meet people at the ground (Altrincham FC), and we get on well. You can grab a beer beforehand which is a nice way to relax as well.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Anyone wishing to join Tony on the walk to help beat prostate cancer can sign up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/prostatecanceruk.org\/get-involved\/football-march?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social-media&amp;utm_campaign=football-march&amp;utm_content=organic-video\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A minimum target of \u00a3350 is recommended, however, there are prizes to be won for those who go above and beyond.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, Tony is currently undergoing a yearlong fundraiser, running 5k every day.
