{"id":810,"date":"2017-01-11T17:10:03","date_gmt":"2017-01-11T17:10:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2017\/01\/11\/manchester-city-council-respond-lib-dem-claims-5-tax-increase-fund-town-hall-bosses-pay-rise\/"},"modified":"2017-01-11T17:10:03","modified_gmt":"2017-01-11T17:10:03","slug":"manchester-city-council-respond-lib-dem-claims-5-tax-increase-fund-town-hall-bosses-pay-rise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/manchester-city-council-respond-lib-dem-claims-5-tax-increase-fund-town-hall-bosses-pay-rise\/","title":{"rendered":"Manchester City Council respond to Lib Dem claims that 5% tax increase is to fund town hall bosses pay rise"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Responding to claims from the Liberal Democrats that there will be a 5% increase in council tax to accomodate a pay rise for top town hall bosses, <strong>Councillor John Flanagan<\/strong> has spoken to The NQ to dispell these claims.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Flanagan, the Labour councillor for <strong>Miles Platting and Newton Heath<\/strong>, who is also a <strong>Member of the Executive on the Council<\/strong>, has hit out against the claims made by sole Liberal Democrat councillor&nbsp;<strong>John Leech<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said: &quot;[These figures] aren&#39;t&nbsp;correct. <strong>3% <\/strong>of the Council Tax increase is to be used to pay for <strong>Adult Social Care pressures<\/strong> and the <strong>remaining 1.99% <\/strong>is to be used to <strong>fund pot holes and increase the number of apprenticeships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;These areas of investment are what Manchester residents have told the council they want it to do, despite the government refusing to adequately fund Adult Social Care or Highways maintenance.&quot;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align:center\">\n<figure class=\"image file-default media-element\" style=\"display:inline-block\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"John Flanagan\" data-fid=\"1111\" data-media-element=\"1\" height=\"190\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/sites\/default\/files\/flanagan_j.jpg\" title=\"John Flanagan\" width=\"190\" \/><figcaption>Councillor John Flanagan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Roger Williams<\/strong>, head of Media at the council, also added: &quot;The senior salary staff review, which <i>will <\/i>result in <strong>savings of &pound;250,000<\/strong> over three years is having absolutely <strong>no impact on Council Tax Bills<\/strong> other than helping to keep them down.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Williams said that the wording used by the Liberal Democrats (<a href=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/news\/lib-dem-councillor-slams-stomach-turning-5-council-tax-hike-fund-salary-increases-town-hall\">published by The NQ on 9 January<\/a>) has been <strong>misleading<\/strong>: &quot;The use of the term &quot;executive&quot; is misleading here.
