This was swiftly followed by Gary Lineker\u2019s message on what he really thinks about Qatar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Broadcasters BBC and ITV have received criticism for disregarding the iconic World Cup opening ceremony put forth by Qatar, the first Middle Eastern country and the first Muslim country to host the footballing competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans of the World Cup took to Twitter to show their outrage and labelled it a \u2018racist and insensitive move\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/followalexcam\/status\/1594453387801726976?s=20&#038;t=ZINuvAPYmxVwwd2S9xvN3A\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One Twitter user said that even the Russian World Cup opening ceremony in 2018 was \u201cshown in full\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When Russia hosted the world cup in 2018, it had already annexed Crimea and occupied eastern Ukraine. At the time there was zero criticism of it from the BBC and the opening ceremony was shown in full. Yet the BBC chose today to sanctimoniously lecture to us. We simply ask for people to respect our culture\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/FatimaBarkatula\/status\/1594363137419104261?s=20&#038;t=ZINuvAPYmxVwwd2S9xvN3A\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Support for BBC and ITV decision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some supported BBC and ITV\u2019s decision not to show the opening ceremony and targeted Qatar\u2019s law on homosexuality as their number one reason for boycotting the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Homosexuality is illegal in Qatar. It is not simply a propaganda machine for this Tory government, but for the British ruling class, in its war on workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fans criticised commentators Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Alex Scott. Some reasons included being paid to go to Qatar despite publicly shaming the country\u2019s laws when they could have boycotted the event instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/PaulAllen2022\/status\/1593978927546077186?s=20&#038;t=ZINuvAPYmxVwwd2S9xvN3A\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An original tribute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some were left wondering what was so wrong about the opening ceremony that it wasn\u2019t televised. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/c\/GhanimAlMuftah\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ghanim al Muftah<\/a><\/strong>, a 20-year old Qatari YouTuber born with a rare condition which impairs development of the spine, recited a verse from the Quran which was translated as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">BBC News reported on \u2018The message of peace\u2019 at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/QatarWorldCup2022?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#QatarWorldCup2022<\/a> and attribute it entirely to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MorganFreeman?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MorganFreeman<\/a> missing out the disabled Quran reciter <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ghanimalmuftah?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#ghanimalmuftah<\/a> that he was on the stage with at the opening ceremony reciting the Quran. (@YusufChambers) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YusufChambers\/status\/1594402860670029824?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 20, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UK hypocrisy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Others said Qatar should send BBC reporters back home and disqualify them from covering the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/twitter.com\/sham_jab\/status\/1594401763171487746?s=20&#038;t=ZINuvAPYmxVwwd2S9xvN3A\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>29 year old Manchester resident and long-time World Cup fan Zain Hussain said: &#8220;the opening ceremony and what was said was actually beautiful. Considering what Qatar was trying to say was not to force religion down anyone&#8217;s throat or disrespect anyone&#8217;s belief system. They were trying to highlight their own belief which they have all the right to do. If this issue was as BBC and Gary Lineker have portrayed, they should not be on TV discussing the World Cup matches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It will be interesting to see Lineker&#8217;s twist on it everyday when he reviews the matches.
