{"id":8239,"date":"2022-11-28T16:15:58","date_gmt":"2022-11-28T16:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/?p=8239"},"modified":"2023-01-24T08:37:16","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T08:37:16","slug":"midwives-working-conditions-low-staffing-levels-and-pay-are-now-declared-as-a-state-of-emergency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/midwives-working-conditions-low-staffing-levels-and-pay-are-now-declared-as-a-state-of-emergency\/","title":{"rendered":"Midwives&#8217; working conditions: low staffing levels and pay are now declared as a state of emergency"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>March With Midwives demonstration held outside town hall despite heavy rain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Staff shortages, pressures caused by an increased workload, no breaks and no pay rises have led to psychological trauma and burn out<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Campaign group call for immediate &#8216;radical action and crisis management measures&#8217;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Midwives and supporters of the <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/MarchWithMidwivesUK?fbclid=IwAR3yiMbUHh-2L95prlYs8dkJgy7VpWuEjwRsZaZ6iWWGhDT8EaelZMs9j0w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March with Midwives campaign<\/a> protested in St Peter&#8217;s Square outside the town hall on Sunday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They called on local MPs to address a state of emergency within local maternity services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thousands attended demonstrations around the UK as midwives demand &#8220;more time, more money and more autonomy&#8221; for the essential service they say is under extreme pressure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>Not a day goes by that we don\u2019t hear of a maternity service having to close temporarily, suspend services or divert women to other maternity units just because there simply aren\u2019t enough midwives<\/em><\/p><cite>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcm.org.uk\/media-releases\/2021\/september\/rcm-warns-of-midwife-exodus-as-maternity-staffing-crisis-grows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Royal College of Midwives<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Among those who marched in Manchester is midwife Abigail Latif, who has recently left the NHS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Abigail said: &#8220;We are leaving on a weekly basis because we are denied basic human rights. We\u2019re not getting breaks on 14-hour shifts, the litigation is so high and the pressures of the system mean you can\u2019t support women and do your job. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We are suffering psychological trauma and we are burnt out.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/11\/Desperate-Measures-1024x810.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/11\/Desperate-Measures-1024x810.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/11\/Desperate-Measures-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/11\/Desperate-Measures-768x608.jpg 768w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/11\/Desperate-Measures-1536x1215.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2022\/11\/Desperate-Measures-2048x1620.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8216;I&#8217;m a burnt-out midwife&#8217; \/\/ Photo: Ruby Qaimkhani<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tipping point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The final straw that led to Abigail&#8217;s resignation was being expected to work in other areas aside from normal births, her specialism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A normal birth means there is no medical intervention such as an induction or epidural when labour occurs spontaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">March with Midwives manifesto <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/MarchWithMidwivesUK?fbclid=IwAR3yiMbUHh-2L95prlYs8dkJgy7VpWuEjwRsZaZ6iWWGhDT8EaelZMs9j0w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">March with Midwives manifesto<\/a> highlights how many midwives had no choice but to leave their jobs. In 2021, 16,000 midwives and supporters of the campaign marched to raise concerns about low staffing levels, unmet demands and midwives&#8217; working conditions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>&#8216;I can\u2019t name a single birth centre that is open on a 24\/7 basis. Some of them have been closed for months and the government is covering that up<\/em>&#8216;<\/p><cite>Abigail Latif<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;One of the really sad things is that it is affecting women\u2019s birth choice. If you wanted to give birth at a birth centre because you want low risk care or want a water birth, that facility isn\u2019t available 24\/7. anymore. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You\u2019re not going to know that until you turn up at the birth centre when you\u2019re in labour, because it\u2019s not being published anywhere. So those women that do want that type of birth, the labour wards are where you will be directed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked why the NHS won&#8217;t distribute more funds into midwifery, Abigail said: &#8220;The government is the one that can give funding to the NHS. The NHS do get accused of not using the funds correctly and we know that the funding in certain areas has been haemorrhaged. They aim to get a firm plan in place to resolve the shortage but no set date is in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Campaigners are asking the public to sign the <a href=\"http:\/\/change.org\/p\/support-urgent-government-support-and-investment-into-maternity-services-to-solve-the-staffing-crisis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">petition<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/MarchWithMidwivesUK?fbclid=IwAR3yiMbUHh-2L95prlYs8dkJgy7VpWuEjwRsZaZ6iWWGhDT8EaelZMs9j0w\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> get involved<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Midwives and supporters of the March with Midwives campaign protested in St Peter&#8217;s Square outside the town hall on Sunday.
