{"id":924,"date":"2017-02-15T08:27:31","date_gmt":"2017-02-15T08:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/2017\/02\/15\/bishop-manchester-rededicates-cross-st-peters-square\/"},"modified":"2017-02-15T08:27:31","modified_gmt":"2017-02-15T08:27:31","slug":"bishop-manchester-rededicates-cross-st-peters-square","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/bishop-manchester-rededicates-cross-st-peters-square\/","title":{"rendered":"Bishop of Manchester rededicates cross in St Peter&#8217;s square"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eHli0hgZEiE\" width=\"560\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Bishop of Manchester took part in a ceremony to rededicate&nbsp;the historic cross in St Peter&rsquo;s Square following Metrolink work which uncovered a secret crypt.<\/p>\n<p>During the recent transformation of St Peter&rsquo;s Square to expand the tram system, engineers found a crypt belonging to the former St Peter&rsquo;s Church, in which items such as bottles, clay pipes and hats were found.<\/p>\n<p>The crypt is thought to date back to 1788 when the church was built, in what was then a small Georgian town.<\/p>\n<p>Metrolink resealed the burial vaults and covered the crypt with 750 tonnes of concrete to protect it.<\/p>\n<p>St Peter&rsquo;s Church was demolished in 1907 and St Peter&rsquo;s Square cross was erected in 1908<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-923\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/02\/cenotaph_and_st_peters_church_1920-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2575\" height=\"1607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/02\/cenotaph_and_st_peters_church_1920-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/02\/cenotaph_and_st_peters_church_1920-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/02\/cenotaph_and_st_peters_church_1920-1024x639.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/02\/cenotaph_and_st_peters_church_1920-768x479.jpg 768w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/02\/cenotaph_and_st_peters_church_1920-1536x959.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/satellite.mmu.ac.uk\/northernquota-old\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/437\/2017\/02\/cenotaph_and_st_peters_church_1920-2048x1278.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2575px) 100vw, 2575px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rededication by the Bishop of the historic St Peter&rsquo;s Square cross ties in with final works to overhaul the square, which are expected to be finished in the spring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left; color: rgb(34, 34, 34); text-transform: none; text-indent: 0px; letter-spacing: normal; font-family: Calibri; font-size: 20px; font-style: normal; font-weight: normal; word-spacing: 0px; white-space: normal; orphans: 2; widows: 2; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); font-variant-ligatures: normal; font-variant-caps: normal; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;\"><strong><span class=\"il\">Bishop<\/span> <span class=\"il\">of<\/span> <span class=\"il\">Manchester<\/span> David Walker,<\/strong> said: &ldquo;St Peter&#39;s Church stood here through the formative years <span class=\"il\">of<\/span><span class=\"il\">Manchester<\/span>&#39;s development into the world&#39;s first industrial city. It witnessed the massacre <span class=\"il\">of<\/span> 1819 &#8211; the event which serves as a permanent reminder <span class=\"il\">of<\/span> the importance <span class=\"il\">of<\/span> upholding <span class=\"il\">Manchester<\/span>&#39;s democratic traditions.
