Developing skills in industry
Skills
A long-term view.
A report by the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking (2018) estimates that the hydrogen and fuel cells sector will create 30 million jobs and $2,000 billion annual sales worldwide by 2050.We have the technology, the minds and the know-how
Defining and developing a roadmap to low carbon skills for those already in industry is challenging. But there are consistencies across most sectors, for example, transport, energy, construction and smart energy when it comes to hydrogen and fuel cells skills development and associated issues to supporting any new market.
Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre leads the development of wider skills programmes with business partners who advise us on the types of skills they require for future hydrogen and green economies – and exactly what they want and need from future graduates.
The long-term skills demand projections are uncertain for key emerging technologies such as hydrogen and fuel cells, and there is recognition that further research is needed in this area.
What we can do now
Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre takes a joined up approach with academic institutions and bodies at city-region level committing to develop the skills required. We know that education and skills underpin our ability to reach our ambition of a zero-carbon economy and that by ensuring our students and local population are equipped with the necessary skills to fill these roles, the city region can achieving its low carbon vision.
We also work closely with experienced business-focused experts who coordinate with local businesses in the Greater Manchester area to promote hydrogen technologies through a dedicated programme of workshops.
