Hydrogen and fuel cell technology is a global opportunity.

A report by the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Joint Undertaking* estimates that the hydrogen and fuel cells sector will create 30 million jobs and $2,000 billion annual sales worldwide by 2050, whilst The Hydrogen Council estimates that by 2030, hydrogen will be a significant energy player with millions of hydrogen-powered vehicles on the road.

What’s more, the development of the hydrogen economy has the potential to play a major role in global decarbonisation.

Working internationally

Manchester Fuel Cell Innovation Centre is actively working with education and industry partners in China, India, Japan and the United States and is actively building partnerships with many more organisations globally.

We also continue our collaboration with a number of European partners with whom we have worked over the past three years on HySchools (Hydrogen in Schools), a unique transnational outreach project to share and promote learning about clean energy.

The Centre is actively involved with Meet Hydrogen which supports regions and companies in the development of clean energy solutions using hydrogen. Amer Gaffar and Dr Justyna Kulczyk-Malecka were invited to speak at the Meet Hydrogen conference in 2019 in Poznan, Poland and provide support and expertise to develop the hydrogen agenda.

More widely we have collaborated with 89 European cities and regions on the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking Study, Fuel Cells and Hydrogen for Green Energy in European Cities and Regions

How we can work with you

  • Feasibility studies into the production of hydrogen by various processes/technologies, in particular using renewable energy
  • Developing materials, processes and systems/sub-systems for the storage of hydrogen
  • Support with projects that use hydrogen as a fuel for stationary, automobile and portable fuel cell applications
  • Develop hydrogen infrastructure in public-private collaboration for the production, storage and applications of hydrogen – includes safety, standards and codes, capacity building and public awareness
  • Support for demonstration projects relating to hydrogen production, storage and application
  • Develop and demonstrate the application of hydrogen and fuel cells for power generation and transportation with SMEs and industry.
